The pine cladded Bisti

The island town of Ermioni is split into three sections.  The port of Limania is located on the northern side of the peninsula, with the lively Mandraki on the southern side.  Then at the far end of the town, at the eastern point, there is the pine cladded area, which is called the Bisti.  Along the Bisti, one can enjoy leisurely walks at any time of the day, as there is plenty of shade from the sun.  One can sit on one of the benches and just read and ponder, or just relax. Then for the ones that want to do something more energetic, one can swim in the crystal blue sea, or find a nice secluded rocky cove, which overlooks the islands of Dokos and Hydra.   The sea surrounds the town of Ermioni, from three sides, hence Ermioni being often referred to as an 'island' town.

The lively Mandrakia area of Ermioni

Mandrakia is on the southern side of Ermioni. It is a place where one can sit in a cafe or bar, listening to music, or watch the world go by. This part is classed as the liveliest, as in the many tavernas scattered along the harbour, one can enjoy fresh fish, squid or octopus, served with wine, or the more traditional drink of ouzo.

Today many yacht flotillas visit and moor up along the waterfront during the busy summer months.  Local fishing boats still continue to use the Mandrakia harbour, as well as amateur fishermen of all ages, trying their skills at fishing in the early hours of the morning, and late evenings.  During the height of summer, the local and visiting Athenians, still take their traditional evening stroll (volta) along the Mandrakia waterfront, before deciding where they will eat. At Mandrakia's western end, you can walk along the road that climbs to the ancient hill of Pronos.  This hill is where the original ancient town of Hermione was located, with a commercial harbour in the bay below.  Today, children and adults alike, fly their kites on Clean Monday, and enjoy traditional dancing and music, accompanied by fasting food. At the top of Pronos hill is the chapel of Aghia Hermione, which has been built on the foundations of an ancient temple to the goddess Hera.  This position commands fantastic views of Mandrakia, Limania and the pine cladded Bisti, as well as the islands of Dokos and Hydra, which are viewed beyond Kapari bay.

The name Mandrakia is the Greek description for 'low walls', which is given to the small stone harbours that are still visible along the original waterfront, before the new road and paved walkway was constructed.  This part of Ermioni was the traditional boat building side of town, in  additions to being the home of the many fishermen and their boats during the 18th - 20th century.  Today, only three of these Mandrakia harbours remain on the far western side of the coastline.  One harbour is still in its original state, the other two being modernised by the nightclubs opposite.  However, it does show how much Ermioni used to rely on the sea for its survival and development.  Sadly, only one traditional fishing boat builder remains today, operating at the far eastern end of Mandrakia, close to the wooded Bisti peninsula.

Independence Day - Hronia Polla!

Independence Day is celebrated on the 25 March and is a major national holiday.  It is the celebration of the rebellion against the Ottoman Turks, who had occupied the country for nearly 400 years.  Today in Ermioni, the day began with a mass service at the 9th C Byzantine Taxiarches (Archangels) church, in the old village of Ermioni, followed by a tribute at the museum memorial.  The final procession was made down to the port of Limania, where speeches were given and the laying of wreaths commenced at the war memorial.  The event continued with the playing of the national music and a march/parade past the dignitaries by children and students of Ermioni, who were dressed in national costumes.  Finally at the end, traditional dancing took place in the main square.  Today was an exceptional day, with beautiful blue skies, and many children taking part.

Situated in a small country hamlet, 6 kms from Ermioni, one will find Apostolis Lodge.  Peace, tranquillity and the beach on your doorstep, what more can a holiday maker want?  The owners will make everyone welcomed.  Greece is still a perfectly safe place to visit, regardless of the economic climate. The holiday rentals for most has declined, which is sad.  The country has so much to offer, is beautiful and has lots to offer the holiday maker. Demonstrations may take place, but most demonstrations are peaceful.  It is a small group of anarchists who want to disrupt everything.  The Greek people are suffering: job losses, reduction in salaries and more. Their whole lives have changed and these changes will continue.  People should not abandon Greece as a destination.  I would like to see people support Greek tourism.  One place which is well worth a visit is Ermioni.  Undiscovered, charming and a great place from which to explore many historical sites, besides visiting some of the fine beaches that surround the area.

Agios Gerasimos

Today was the festival of Saint Gerasimos.  The small church of Agios Gerasimos is on top of a hill, which overlooks the island town of Ermioni.  The views from this church are truly spectacular. Saint Gerasimos was born in 1503 in Trikala, Thessaly.  He was ordained a monk at Mount Athos, then went to Jerusalem, where he lived for 12 years.    He died 15 August 1579, and in 1622 he was made a Saint.
